Principal Legal Officer – Government Litigation

About the role

The Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure is seeking a Principal Legal Officer to join its in‑house Litigation team. This temporary, full‑time position will support high‑profile, complex litigation and regulatory matters across NSW, providing strategic legal advice and leadership.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver authoritative, high‑level legal advice on complex, high‑risk planning, administrative and regulatory law matters.
• Lead and manage contentious litigation, prosecutions and major legal projects.
• Interpret legislation, policy and case law to identify, manage and mitigate legal and regulatory risk.
• Oversee preparation and review of statutory instruments, policy proposals and other legal documents.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with senior stakeholders, influencing outcomes and supporting government priorities.
• Mentor and guide legal staff, ensuring consistent, high‑quality legal practice.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in planning litigation, administrative and regulatory law.
• Proven ability to lead complex legal matters and major projects in a fast‑paced, high‑profile environment.
• Strong analytical skills with the capacity to translate complex issues into clear, practical solutions.
• Excellent stakeholder management and communication abilities.
