About the role
APA, Australia's energy infrastructure partner, is looking for a Mathematical Optimisation Specialist to join its Asset Intelligence team, reporting to the Manager Asset Intelligence. The role uses mathematical optimisation and modelling to support operational and investment decisions across the Power business, turning complex operational challenges, constraints and commercial objectives into practical, production-ready models. The preferred location is Brisbane, but candidates based in Sydney or Melbourne are also welcome.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and own mathematical optimisation models supporting operational and investment decisions, including dispatch optimisation, simulation and predictive modelling.
- Translate operational problems, constraints and commercial objectives into practical mathematical models using Gurobi and related techniques.
- Analyse asset performance, reliability trends and failure modes to find ways to improve asset utilisation, efficiency and value.
- Develop, test, validate and deploy production-ready optimisation solutions in Python, including scenario modelling and sensitivity analysis.
- Work with engineering, operations and commercial teams to integrate optimisation models into operational decision making.
Required profile
- Demonstrated experience using Gurobi for mathematical optimisation (constraints and objective function programming); this is a must-have requirement.
- PhD in Mathematics or a closely related quantitative discipline, with a strong foundation in mathematical modelling and optimisation; an undergraduate electrical or mechanical engineering qualification is preferred.
- Experience in mathematical optimisation and/or operations research, turning real-world problems into practical models.
- Strong communication and stakeholder skills, able to explain complex mathematical concepts to business stakeholders and turn analytical outputs into business recommendations.
- Eligibility to work in Australia; the role involves critical data, systems or infrastructure and candidates are subject to background vetting.
Required skills
- Gurobi for mathematical optimisation
- Python for analytical and optimisation solutions
- Operations research and mathematical modelling
What we offer
- Targeted career development programs
- Competitive remuneration and employee benefits
- Flexible working arrangements and wellbeing initiatives
- Inclusive parental leave of 18 weeks, including superannuation
The role closes on Wednesday 11 November 2026 (reference number JR5189). APA does not accept unsolicited resumes from recruitment agencies.
