Legal Officer – Child Advocate

About the role

The Office of the Public Guardian is seeking a Legal Officer (Child Advocate) to represent the voices of children and young people within the child protection system. This role ensures that legal decisions consider the rights and wishes of vulnerable individuals in proceedings such as family group meetings, court hearings, and tribunals.

Key responsibilities

• Perform child advocacy functions across areas of law including child protection, youth justice, education, human rights and administrative law.
• Advise, assist and support children and young people to understand decisions, access information and have their views heard.
• Represent children and young people in meetings, the Children’s Court and the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT).
• Build and maintain positive relationships with internal team members and external stakeholders.
• Mentor and support colleagues in delivering advocacy functions.
• Ensure compliance with data entry, reporting requirements and other corporate responsibilities.

Required profile

• Law degree from a recognised tertiary institution.
• Admission as a legal practitioner in Queensland or eligibility for immediate admission.
• Minimum two years post‑admission professional experience in relevant legal areas (desirable).
• C class driver’s licence.
• Working with Children Check (Blue Card) clearance.
