Legal & Industrial Officer – 13‑month Fixed Term

About the role

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) is seeking a Legal & Industrial Officer to cover a 13‑month parental‑leave absence. This full‑time fixed‑term position will support the ACTU’s industrial relations agenda through legal advocacy, strategic litigation and policy development.

Key responsibilities

• Represent the ACTU in significant matters before the Fair Work Commission and courts.
• Provide legal and industrial advice to ACTU leadership and affiliated unions.
• Develop submissions, briefs and speeches on industrial issues and law reform.
• Participate in consultative bodies, working groups and industry forums.
• Support affiliates by delivering advice, creating educational materials and sharing best practices.

Required profile

• Minimum 8 years’ experience as a lawyer or industrial officer in a union, legal practice or similar organisation.
• Strong knowledge of industrial relations and employment‑related legislation.
• Demonstrated ability in industrial advocacy and negotiation.
• Excellent research, written and verbal communication skills.
• Commitment to union values, social justice and diversity.

Required skills

• Legal qualification with a current practising certificate (preferred).
• Experience in anti‑discrimination law or interest in law reform (desirable).
• Understanding of economic and labour‑market concepts (desirable).
