Legal Counsel (Payments & Regulatory)

About the role

Axiom is seeking a legal contractor to provide interim support to a high‑growth technology business’s payments and regulatory function for a 3–4‑month engagement. The role operates in a fast‑paced, product‑driven environment and works closely with senior leaders across payments, risk, and compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in developing and expanding payments products across Australian, US, and UK markets.
• Provide guidance to Product and Engineering teams on AFSL, AML, and broader risk‑management obligations.
• Deliver legal insight and risk‑mitigation support for high‑priority strategic initiatives and incident response matters.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with regulators and technical subject‑matter experts.
• Work with Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Privacy teams to embed financial‑crime considerations into product design.
• Support day‑to‑day legal operations to ensure continuity across the payments legal workstream.

Required profile

• Practical experience in payments and financial services, preferably in tech‑enabled or product‑driven environments.
• Strong knowledge of licensing, anti‑money‑laundering requirements, and regulatory risk frameworks relevant to payments operations.
• Ability to communicate complex regulatory concepts clearly and work effectively in fast‑moving, cross‑functional settings.
• Capacity to manage multiple priorities and operate autonomously within a flexible engagement model.

Required skills

• Knowledge of AFSL (Australian Financial Services Licence) regulations.
• Knowledge of AML (Anti‑Money‑Laundering) compliance requirements.
