LAP Traineeship - Plant Operator (Bauxite Processing)

About the role

Rio Tinto is looking for Local Aboriginal Persons (LAP) Plant Operator trainees to learn how bauxite is processed before being transported for export. The traineeship gives practical experience in mineral processing in a safe, supportive and team-oriented environment, and offers a pathway into long-term careers in processing and operations at Rio Tinto Weipa. It is an 18-month fixed-term contract on a 7-day roster of 12.5-hour day and night shifts.

Key responsibilities

• Operate and monitor beneficiation plant equipment used to wash, screen and process bauxite ore.
• Assist with the safe operation of conveyors, crushers, screens, pumps and associated equipment.
• Carry out routine plant inspections and identify equipment faults or operational issues.
• Monitor plant performance through control systems and report abnormalities to supervisors.
• Complete pre-start inspections, safety checks and workplace risk assessments.
• Maintain housekeeping standards and record operational data and shift documentation.
• Respond to plant alarms and follow operational procedures under supervision.
• Follow Rio Tinto safety, environmental and operational standards, and take part in training and development.

Required profile

• Current driver's licence and LAP Status approval.
• Priority-driven, self-motivated and able to work independently to meet deadlines.
• Able to undertake rostered 12-hour day and night shifts and physically demanding work, including adverse weather.
• Passes D&A and medical testing.
• Enthusiastic, team player and committed to safety.
• Must complete all pre-screening questions and language, literacy and numeracy tests.

The Weipa Operations site is on the Western Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, with two bauxite mines, processing facilities, ship loaders, an export wharf, ports, power stations, a rail network and ferry terminals. Applications close 9 November 2026.
