LAP Traineeship - Mine Operator (Amrun)

About the role

Rio Tinto is recruiting Local Aboriginal Persons (LAP) Mine Operator trainees to operate haul trucks, rear tippers, water carts and other machinery for surface extraction of ore at its Weipa operations in Far North Queensland. The position is an 18-month fixed-term contract on a 7-day roster covering day and night shifts of 12.5 hours.

Key responsibilities

• Operate long-haul trucks to move bauxite to the dump bridge before processing in the beneficiation plant
• Operate mobile plant machinery such as rear tippers, watercarts and belly dumpers
• Use radio and information technology to communicate on the job
• Complete pre-task risk assessments such as take 5s and pre-start checks
• Carry out daily vehicle inspections

Required profile

• Current driver's licence and LAP status approval
• Priority-driven, self-motivated and able to work independently to meet deadlines
• Able to undertake rostered 12-hour day and night shifts
• Physically fit, passing D&A and medical testing
• Team player, committed to the safety of themselves and their team, and able to tolerate physically demanding work including shift work and adverse weather
