Instrument Chemist

About the role

Eurofins Environment Testing Australia is hiring an Instrument Chemist for a full-time, permanent position in Girraween, NSW. The role sits in the afternoon shift, Monday to Friday, and reports to the Section Supervisor. The post holder performs routine and non-routine analysis of environmental samples using mass spectrometry instruments.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse environmental samples (water, soil, sediment, sludge and waste) by LC-MS/MS, GC-MS and GC-FID
• Prepare samples, standards, reagents, calibration solutions and quality control materials according to approved methods
• Review analytical data for accuracy, completeness and compliance before reporting
• Interpret chromatograms, spectra and instrument outputs to spot anomalies or non-conformances
• Operate and maintain LC-MS/MS, GC-MS and GC-FID systems, including source cleaning, column replacement, detector maintenance, leak checking, tuning and performance verification
• Troubleshoot instrumentation, methods and sample issues, liaising with vendors and service engineers when needed
• Monitor quality control results, take part in internal audits, proficiency testing and quality improvement initiatives
• Maintain laboratory records, worksheets, instrument logs and electronic data files, ensuring data integrity
• Train laboratory technicians and junior chemists and follow safety procedures and the Eurofins Code of Ethics

Required profile

• Minimum 2-5 years' experience in an environmental, commercial, pharmaceutical, food or contract analytical laboratory
• Tertiary qualification in Engineering or Science
• Eligible to work in Australia/New Zealand with current work rights or an appropriate visa
• Good verbal and written communication, abstract reasoning and a desire to keep learning

Required skills

• Hands-on operation and troubleshooting of LC-MS/MS, GC-MS and GC-FID systems
• Good knowledge of MS Office, especially MS Excel
• General knowledge of systems and production control
