Infrastructure Engineer / System Administrator (APS6) – Canberra

About the role

This position provides Infrastructure Engineer and Systems Administrator services for a Federal Government department in Canberra. The role involves planning, deploying, configuring, and supporting network and system solutions while ensuring security and reliability.

Key responsibilities

• Design, configure and maintain full‑stack infrastructure (physical, virtual, network, storage) for business applications.
• Implement Infrastructure‑as‑Code using Ansible and Git/GitLab, including CI/CD pipelines for auditable changes.
• Provide technical direction to external vendors and ensure alignment with security and operational constraints.
• Mentor team members on automation‑first practices and secure operations.
• Document solutions, create diagrams, procedures and maintain Ansible/GitLab artefacts for knowledge transfer.
• Record and maintain files in accordance with departmental security classifications.

Required profile

• Significant experience delivering infrastructure services in a high‑assurance environment.
• Ability to work effectively in a small, multidisciplinary team.
• Strong problem‑solving skills with a focus on security and reliability.

Required skills

• Linux (Ubuntu) administration – hardening, patching, AppArmor, systemd, packaging, network services.
• Microsoft Windows Server administration – AD/ADFS, certificate services.
• Automation & IaC – Ansible playbooks/roles, Git/GitLab workflows, Bash and PowerShell scripting.
• Virtualisation – VMware vSphere/ESXi design, host patching, vCenter upgrades, VM templates and snapshots.
• Database platforms – SQL Server optimisation, upgrades, consolidation; Linux‑hosted databases backup/restore and HA/DR.
• Storage & backup – Dell Networker, Isilon/PowerScale, VEEAM or similar for virtual workloads.
• Networking & security – Cisco firewalls/switches (policy, NAT, VPN, ACLs), segmentation, routing, basic QoS, Linux firewalling.

• Fixed‑term contract of 2 years (12 months initial + 12‑month extension).
• Hybrid work arrangement in Canberra.
• Rate of $127 per hour inclusive of superannuation.
