Forward Deployed Engineer (Sydney)

About the role

OpenAI’s Forward Deployed Engineering team partners with customers to turn research breakthroughs into production systems. As a Forward Deployed Engineer based in Sydney you will lead end‑to‑end deployments of frontier models, owning discovery, technical scoping, system design, build and production rollout.

Key responsibilities

• Own technical delivery across multiple deployments from prototype to stable production.
• Build full‑stack systems that deliver customer value and improve learning loops.
• Embed closely with customer teams to understand needs and guide adoption.
• Scope work, sequence delivery, remove blockers early and make trade‑offs between scope, speed and quality.
• Contribute directly in code when progress or clarity depends on it.
• Codify working patterns into tools, playbooks or reusable building blocks.
• Share field feedback to inform research and product roadmaps.

Required profile

• 5+ years of engineering or technical deployment experience with customer‑facing work.
• Experience scoping and delivering complex systems in fast‑moving or ambiguous environments.
• Ability to write and review production‑grade code across frontend and backend using Python, JavaScript or comparable stacks.
• Experience building or deploying systems powered by LLMs or generative models and understanding model behaviour.
• Strong decision‑making under pressure and clear communication with engineers, product teams and customers.
• Proactive risk identification and calm judgment when stakes are high.
