First Deckhand - Sailaway Port Douglas

About the role

Sailaway, part of Journey Beyond, offers daily reef cruises from Port Douglas aboard catamarans, with sites such as Mackay Coral Cay and the Low Isles. It is seeking a casual First Deckhand who will be the first point of contact for guests, providing customer service while keeping passengers safe and comfortable. The role covers passenger operations, safety briefings, tours and keeping the vessel clean and ready.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver professional, friendly customer service to passengers.
• Manage passenger boarding, including accurate manifest checks, money collection and headcounts.
• Conduct safety briefs, snorkelling briefs and guided tours with environmental interpretation.
• Run memorable glass bottom boat tours.
• Keep the vessel and equipment clean, stored and ready, following food safety rules for catering.
• Take part in emergency drills, follow safety management systems, and be ready to give first aid.
• Complete incident reports on time and look after the First Aid Kit and oxygen supplies.

Required profile

• Previous experience on a vessel or in the tourism industry.
• Previous experience as a Coxswain Grade 1 NC.
• Current Senior First Aid/CPR/O2 certificate, Responsible Service of Alcohol certificate and Food Hygiene certificate.
• Ability to lead guided snorkel tours and island heritage walks, with knowledge of reef interpretation and the history of the Low Isles.
• Good organisation, time management, presentation and flexibility, able to work independently and in a team in hot conditions.

Required skills

• Solid sailing experience and boating knowledge.
• Understanding of safety management systems and vessel handling.
• Snorkelling procedures and reef interpretation.
