Financial Accountant, Group Finance

About the role

SMEC, part of the SJ Group, is looking for an experienced Financial Accountant to join its Melbourne-based finance team on an initial 12-month fixed-term contract. The role plays a key part in delivering high-quality financial reporting, supporting month-end and year-end processes and contributing to finance transformation and continuous improvement across the Group.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and review detailed and complex account reconciliations to maintain financial controls and the integrity of account balances.
• Analyse, prepare and complete key monthly accounting transactions and reconciliations so monthly results are accurate and complete.
• Support the timely preparation of accurate monthly and year-end financial statements, including analysis and commentary on results.
• Prepare and review consolidated financial reports and support associated reporting requirements.
• Investigate accounting, process and data issues and develop practical, solutions-focused outcomes.
• Contribute to process improvement, finance projects and integration activities, and identify ways to improve finance systems, reporting and automation.
• Build relationships with internal and external stakeholders and support colleagues during busy periods.

Required profile

• CA/CPA-qualified accountant with typically 5+ years' post-qualification experience in financial accounting, management accounting and financial reporting.
• Degree or relevant qualification in Accounting, Finance or a related discipline.
• Experience in a professional services and/or industry environment.
• Experience preparing, analysing and reviewing financial statements and reconciliations, and with consolidated financial reporting.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of accounting, business and financial management principles.
• Excellent Excel skills, including data modelling and tools such as Power Query.
• Experience with ERP, consolidation and financial reporting systems, or a strong aptitude for learning new systems quickly.
