Engineering Manager - AI and Emerging Tech

About the role

TAL, a life insurer protecting Australians for over 150 years, is looking for an Engineering Manager for AI and Emerging Technology in Sydney. You will help lead the responsible delivery of innovative AI solutions that make TAL's services simpler, safer and more effective for customers, partners and employees. The role sits at the intersection of technology, trust and impact, and is open only to Sydney-based candidates.

Key responsibilities

• Lead high-performing AI engineering teams to deliver scalable, reliable and valuable AI solutions.
• Turn AI prototypes into production-ready services with strong quality, monitoring and operational discipline.
• Build an engaged engineering culture supporting growth, experimentation and continuous improvement.
• Set clear technical standards that strengthen AI delivery, platform reuse and engineering excellence.
• Embed responsible AI governance, risk management and compliance into every stage of delivery.
• Align business, product and technology stakeholders to deliver AI outcomes that advance TAL's strategy.

Required profile

• 8+ years of experience in software, AI, machine learning or data engineering, including 3+ years leading engineering teams.
• Strong knowledge of generative AI, LLM-based systems and MLOps or LLMOps practices.
• Experience leading and supporting teams by setting standards, encouraging collaboration and helping people grow.
• Ability to communicate technical ideas clearly with product, business and technology stakeholders.
• Understanding of privacy, security, AI governance and regulated Australian financial services environments.

Required skills

• Data engineering, cloud platforms and modern software development.
• Generative AI, LLMs, MLOps or LLMOps.
