EL1 Financial Accountant – Government Finance Leadership

About the role

This senior finance position is with a well‑established Federal Government institution undergoing digital transformation and organisational growth. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, you will lead a small finance team and provide expert accounting advice across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and mentor finance staff while overseeing day‑to‑day finance operations.
• Manage month‑end processes, including journals, accruals and reconciliations.
• Prepare management reports, annual financial statements and budget documentation.
• Maintain reporting through the Central Budget Management System (CBMS) and coordinate Portfolio Budget Statements (PBS) and MYEFO processes.
• Support annual audit activities, compliance requirements and taxation obligations (GST, FBT).
• Develop and review financial policies, procedures and controls, and provide high‑level financial analysis to internal stakeholders.

Required profile

• Australian citizen with at least Baseline security clearance.
• Executive Level 1 (EL1) capability or equivalent leadership experience.
• Professional accounting qualification (CA or CPA) and strong experience in Australian Government financial accounting.
• Proven track record preparing financial statements, budgets and management reports.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication and analytical skills.
