About the role

TAL, a life insurer protecting Australians for over 150 years, is hiring a Data Engineer for its Actuarial Systems team in Sydney. The role builds, tests and supports data solutions that enable actuarial modelling, reporting and downstream business processes, working across Microsoft SQL Server and Azure. It suits a highly skilled technical specialist who can manage competing priorities with minimal supervision and helps shape development standards.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, build, test and implement actuarial data systems and processes, integrating mainly with the TAL Data Platform, Prophet Enterprise platform and TAL Finance Platform.
  • Assist with implementation of accounting standard AASB17, business planning solution changes and the Finance reporting platform.
  • Ensure delivered products are secure, reliable, usable, efficient, effective and, where required, highly available and scalable.
  • Develop technical designs for step-changes in the products.
  • Maintain database environments and provide operational support for critical production processes.
  • Ensure code quality and adherence to platform frameworks through code reviews and peer education.

Required profile

  • 5+ years of working experience, preferably in life insurance.
  • Experience developing data pipelines in traditional and cloud environments using ETL methodologies.
  • Strong technical background, ideally as a developer for 5+ years.
  • Desirable: broad knowledge of application development tools and languages such as C#, ASP.NET, IIS, jQuery, Azure DevOps, GIT, Python, R, XML, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Azure Databricks, Azure Event Hub and Cosmos DB.

Required skills

  • Microsoft stack: SQL Server, databases, T-SQL, SSIS, views and stored procedures.
  • Azure: ADF, Azure SQL, and a working understanding of Azure development; Azure Synapse and Notebooks are desirable.
  • Atlassian tools: JIRA and Confluence.

What we offer

  • Flexible and blended ways of working.
  • Learning, leadership development programs, LinkedIn Learning and global career opportunities through the Daiichi Life Group.
  • TAL-funded life, income protection and total and permanent disability insurance, plus employee insurance discounts.
  • Wellbeing support including an Employee Assistance Program, annual flu vaccinations and health initiatives.
  • Paid parental leave, wellbeing leave, community leave and purchased leave options.
  • TAL Rewards Plus with discounts at hundreds of retailers and services.
