Coordinator, Communication & Engagement

About the role

Yass Valley Council is seeking a Coordinator, Communication & Engagement for a newly created, high-impact position within its Community & Engagement business unit. The role develops, coordinates and executes internal and external communication strategies and engagement initiatives, ensuring timely, accurate and transparent information flows between the Council, its residents, the media and internal stakeholders. It advises the Executive Management Team on high-stakes issues and communication best practice.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of communication and engagement strategies across all Council divisions.
• Manage external media relations, including media releases, media interviews and crisis communication.
• Oversee the website, engagement platform and social media, keeping content current, engaging and accessible.
• Coordinate community engagement, public meetings and consultation processes for major projects, and oversee community events.
• Produce branded written content such as speeches, annual reports, brochures, internal communications and marketing materials.
• Report on support and advice given to the community about grants and events.
• Lead and develop the performance of the Communications & Engagement team.

Required profile

• Demonstrated experience developing and implementing communication and engagement strategies in the public or private sector.
• Experience leading a team in delivering communication, media, events and engagement services.
• Strong project management skills and ability to handle multiple deadlines and competing priorities.
• Ability to translate complex policies into plain English for the public.
• Right to work in Australia and pass relevant pre-employment checks.

What we offer

• Permanent full-time position in a regional hub with a $50 million annual budget, close to Canberra.
• Salary starting at $1,739.86 per week, plus 12% superannuation (Grade 17).
