Clinical Nurse Consultant – Mental Health (Adult Acute Inpatient)

About the role

The Royal Melbourne Hospital is seeking an experienced Clinical Nurse Consultant to provide senior clinical leadership within its Adult Acute Inpatient Mental Health Unit. This full‑time or part‑time, ongoing position focuses on delivering recovery‑oriented, evidence‑based care for consumers with complex mental health needs.

Key responsibilities

• Provide expert clinical consultancy and leadership across the inpatient unit.
• Lead implementation of Safewards, Mental Health Intensive Care Frameworks and initiatives to reduce restrictive interventions.
• Mentor, coach and support nursing staff, including recent recruits.
• Contribute to research, service improvement and clinical practice development activities.
• Support high‑quality, consumer‑centred care planning and recovery‑focused practice.
• Monitor and evaluate key performance indicators to guide local improvement initiatives.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and key stakeholders.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
• Postgraduate qualification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing or equivalent.
• Minimum 6 + years post‑graduate experience in mental health nursing, including high‑acuity inpatient settings.
• Demonstrated clinical leadership and commitment to recovery‑oriented care.
• Strong mentoring, coaching and stakeholder engagement abilities.
