Clinical Coder

About the role

Calvary Mater Newcastle is looking for an experienced Clinical Coder to join its Health Information Services team. The coder reviews, interprets and accurately codes inpatient episodes of care using ICD-10-AM, ACHI and Australia Coding Standards, supporting DRG assignment, Activity Based Funding, performance reporting and compliance with national coding standards. Permanent full-time and part-time positions are available, with flexible arrangements including remote work options.

Key responsibilities

• Assign ICD-10-AM and ACHI codes in line with Australian Coding Standards and organisational requirements
• Keep coded data complete, accurate and timely so that DRG assignment and funding outcomes are reliable
• Meet agreed coding throughput and productivity benchmarks while managing workloads and deadlines
• Take part in coding education, quality review and service improvement, and respond to quality indicators such as PICQ reports and audit findings
• Maintain confidentiality, privacy and information security in line with legislation, standards and policy

Required profile

• Recognised ICD-10-AM, ACHI and Australian Coding Standards qualification with Australian coding experience
• At least 2-3 years of clinical coding in a tertiary or acute hospital setting
• Unlimited working rights in Australia; pre-employment checks (references, work rights, criminal history, WWCC) and proof of immunisation as required

Required skills

• Medical terminology and attention to detail
• Computer literacy and knowledge of hospital information systems
• Ability to work unsupervised, in a team and meet throughput targets
