Associate Director – Electrical Engineer, Generation & Storage
AECOM · Docklands
Job description
About the role
AECOM's Energy practice offers advisory, consulting and engineering design services to power and renewable energy clients. As Associate Director – Electrical Engineer, you will lead the technical electrical design and delivery of medium-voltage balance-of-plant systems for utility-scale wind, solar, battery energy storage (BESS) and hybrid projects. The role centres on conventional power-system engineering, taking the design from inverter, power conversion system or turbine terminals through the collector system, substation and grid connection interface. It suits an experienced electrical engineer who can set a robust technical direction and explain complex electrical issues clearly to clients.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the electrical design approach for medium-voltage balance-of-plant systems, including collector networks, substations, auxiliary systems and grid connection interfaces
- Develop and review design bases, single-line diagrams, equipment ratings, cable sizing and derating, voltage-drop and short-circuit calculations, cable schedules, routing, earthing and lightning protection
- Build and review DIgSILENT PowerFactory models and undertake load-flow, short-circuit, voltage, reactive-power, harmonic and contingency studies
- Select and review transformers and major electrical plant, including ratings, impedance, vector group, tap range, earthing and equipment duty
- Develop and review protection and control philosophies, grading and coordination studies, relay requirements, interfaces, test requirements and commissioning plans
- Coordinate multidisciplinary inputs, mentor engineers, support client decisions and provide technical review during procurement, construction and commissioning
Required profile
- Experienced electrical engineer with a strong record in medium-voltage power-system design (typically 11 kV to 33 kV)
- Background in utilities, industrial power systems, mining, infrastructure, EPC contracting or consulting; renewable energy experience is advantageous but not essential
- Ability to take ownership of complex design packages, work independently and collaborate across disciplines
- Desirable: 12+ years designing and leading medium-voltage systems, and either registered or working towards professional registration on the National Engineering Register (e.g. RPEV or RPEQ), ideally with CPEng status
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related power-engineering discipline
Required skills
- Cable-system design: ampacity, derating, voltage drop, short-circuit withstand, earthing, routing and cable schedules
- DIgSILENT PowerFactory proficiency for power-system studies
- Transformer and switchgear specification
- Protection and control philosophy development, relay settings and commissioning requirements
- Preparation and review of electrical calculations, drawings, specifications, schedules and tender documentation
The role may be based in any of AECOM's key office locations in Australia, and hybrid work options are available. Applications are reviewed as they come in and the role may close early.
