Assistant Accountant (APS5)

About the role

A large federal government department in Canberra is looking for an Assistant Accountant (APS5) to join its small management accounting and asset management team. The role sits within the Finance area, which handles statutory reporting, budgets and financial controls, and is open to ongoing appointment via section 26 transfer.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate day-to-day financial management and help produce information used by the Executive
• Complete day-to-day and month-end processes using SAP, TM1 and Excel, meeting internal and external reporting deadlines
• Prepare journals and complete reconciliations
• Support financial management of departmental projects and assets, including internal budgeting and reporting
• Work with internal stakeholders to resolve day-to-day finance issues
• Assist with the annual financial statements and responses to Questions on Notice, ANAO audit requests and other reporting

Required profile

• Ongoing substantive APS5 status as an accountant or financial auditor; high-performing APS4 accountants will also be considered
• Experience in financial reporting, asset accounting, internal budgeting or financial audit
• Ability to explain numbers clearly to people outside finance and to balance month-end deadlines with ad hoc requests

Required skills

• Strong technical accounting skills, including journals and reconciliations
• Experience using SAP and TM1 is highly desirable
• Clear communication and strong attention to detail
