Recreation Officer

About the role

The Department of Justice and Community Safety is recruiting a Recreation Officer for Loddon Prison and Middleton Prison in the Loddon Mallee region. The role helps prisoners stay active, build skills and enjoy recreation through sport, fitness and hobby programs. It is a full-time, ongoing position at Grade Cog2A, paid $65,373 to $83,950 per year plus superannuation.

Key responsibilities

• Assess the recreational needs of all prisoners and develop, implement and evaluate programs that meet individual and group requirements.
• Deliver services while keeping everyone taking part safe and secure.
• Plan and run varied sport, fitness and hobby programs for individuals and groups.
• Teach, coach and train prisoners in active and passive recreation.
• Check and maintain sports and hobby equipment so it stays safe and ready to use.
• Help plan and run special events and other recreation activities.
• Keep clear records of program attendance and complete regular safety checks and equipment audits.

Required profile

• Completion of the Victorian Prison Officer Pre-service training program, or willingness to complete it.
• A Certificate III in Fitness or higher is an advantage but not essential.
• Computer skills and confidence using common computer programs.
• Ability to adapt to change and learn new skills.
• Team-focused approach and respect for people from diverse backgrounds.
• Good communication, problem-solving and planning skills, staying calm under pressure.

The position is shift work; weekend and evening work is required on a roster basis depending on deployment.
