Career Medical Officer – Night Shift at Royal Hobart Hospital

About the role

The Career Medical Officer provides independent mental‑health medical services across the Royal Hobart Hospital during night hours. Working on a fortnightly roster from 22:30 to 08:30, you will assess emergency referrals, support inpatient units, and attend to patients throughout the hospital who need specialist medical input.

Key responsibilities

• Assess and manage patients referred from the Emergency Department with telephone support from on‑call psychiatrists.
• Provide medical care to patients in inpatient mental‑health units, including the Short Stay Unit.
• Attend to mental‑health patients located in other hospital areas requiring specialist input.
• Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation and ensure all medical decisions are recorded.
• Collaborate closely with consultant psychiatrists and the multidisciplinary team.
• Respond promptly to clinical calls from nursing and other staff, perform required clinical procedures, and ensure safe prescribing and medication administration.
• Participate in discharge planning and uphold legal obligations under the Tasmanian Mental Health Act.

Required profile

• Medical qualification with registration to practice in Australia.
• Experience in mental‑health or psychiatric medicine preferred.
• Ability to work autonomously during night shifts while maintaining professional accountability.
• Strong communication skills for liaison with senior clinicians and multidisciplinary teams.
