System Planning Engineer

About the role

AEMO is seeking a System Planning Engineer to help shape Australia’s power system as it moves toward a net‑zero future. You will apply strong power‑system fundamentals to analyse performance, generate insights and advise senior staff and external stakeholders on emerging challenges.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical support and advice on electricity planning and performance to ensure safe, secure, reliable operation of the power system.
• Contribute to key planning documents such as the Integrated System Plan, Electricity Statement of Opportunities and System Strength reports.
• Develop and improve procedures and methodologies for planning studies.
• Engage with internal and external stakeholders, preparing advice and proposals for network planning matters.
• Produce high‑quality reports on network capability, performance and related planning issues.
• Build and maintain knowledge of the Australian electricity transmission network, generation assets and gas market systems.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in engineering, physics, mathematics, operations research or a related discipline.
• Demonstrated ability to blend detailed technical analysis with high‑level engineering judgement.
• Experience working with incomplete information or tight timeframes to deliver robust recommendations.
• Strong communication skills for presenting findings to senior engineers, leaders and external parties.

Required skills

• Power system analysis and modelling.
• Knowledge of electrical transmission networks and generation assets in the NEM.
