About the role
The Department of Emergency Medicine on Tasmania’s North West Coast is seeking experienced Staff Specialists in Emergency Medicine (FACEM) and Rural Generalists with advanced emergency skills (RACGP/ACCRM Fellows). The role covers shift work, including on‑call duties, across two emergency departments serving a combined population of about 116,000.
Key responsibilities
- Provide high‑quality emergency care in the North West Regional Hospital and Mersey Community Hospital.
- Participate in trauma, stroke, and acute medical presentations, utilizing the VST tele‑medicine program.
- Supervise and mentor registrars, residents, and trainees from ACEM, RACGP and ACRRM programs.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across general medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, obstetrics, ICU and mental health.
- Maintain 24‑hour pathology and radiology liaison and ensure compliance with accreditation standards.
Required profile
- Fellowship in Emergency Medicine (FACEM) or equivalent advanced emergency qualifications (RACGP, ACRRM).
- Significant experience in a senior emergency department role, preferably in a regional or rural setting.
- Ability to work flexible shift patterns, including nights and on‑call periods.
- Commitment to teaching and supervising junior medical staff.
Required skills
- Advanced clinical skills in emergency medicine.
- Proficiency in acute trauma and stroke management.
- Familiarity with tele‑medicine platforms for stroke care.
- Strong decision‑making and leadership in high‑pressure environments.
