Staff Specialist – Emergency Medicine (Permanent/Part‑time)

About the role

The Department of Emergency Medicine on Tasmania’s North West Coast is seeking experienced Staff Specialists in Emergency Medicine (FACEM) and Rural Generalists with advanced emergency skills (RACGP/ACCRM Fellows). The role covers shift work, including on‑call duties, across two emergency departments serving a combined population of about 116,000.

Key responsibilities

• Provide high‑quality emergency care in the North West Regional Hospital and Mersey Community Hospital.
• Participate in trauma, stroke, and acute medical presentations, utilizing the VST tele‑medicine program.
• Supervise and mentor registrars, residents, and trainees from ACEM, RACGP and ACRRM programs.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across general medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, obstetrics, ICU and mental health.
• Maintain 24‑hour pathology and radiology liaison and ensure compliance with accreditation standards.

Required profile

• Fellowship in Emergency Medicine (FACEM) or equivalent advanced emergency qualifications (RACGP, ACRRM).
• Significant experience in a senior emergency department role, preferably in a regional or rural setting.
• Ability to work flexible shift patterns, including nights and on‑call periods.
• Commitment to teaching and supervising junior medical staff.
