Senior Systems Safety Assurance Engineer

About the role

SMEC is seeking a Senior Systems Safety Assurance Engineer to join its rail team in Brisbane. You will support a variety of rail, light‑rail, road and highway projects, ensuring compliance with the Rail Safety National Law and WHS Act while driving safety‑focused engineering solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain system safety assurance plans and reports.
• Facilitate risk‑assessment workshops such as PHA, SHA, IHA, OSHA and CHAIR.
• Provide safety assurance advice to project teams and ensure alignment with regulatory requirements.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary stakeholders to deliver high‑quality, on‑time project deliverables.
• Apply project‑management principles to meet standards and deadlines.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
• Minimum 5 years of experience on rail projects, with knowledge of TAO requirements.
• Proven ability to build trusted relationships and influence project outcomes.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Required skills

• Knowledge of EN20126, EN20128 and EN20129 standards.
• Experience with TAO compliance.
• Facilitation of risk‑assessment workshops (PHA, SHA, IHA, OSHA, CHAIR).
• Hazard‑log management, including ADCs and SFAIRP justifications.
