Senior Media and Communication Officer

About the role

The Senior Media and Communication Officer supports the Communication and Media Branch of the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations. Reporting to the Assistant Director, the role provides high‑quality media advice, creates communications products and ensures consistent messaging across ministerial offices, executives and policy teams.

Key responsibilities

• Respond to media enquiries and prepare briefings, releases and talking points for ministers and senior officials.
• Develop and deliver digital communications, including intranet content and internal newsletters.
• Provide strategic media and communications advice to internal stakeholders.
• Manage administrative tasks and participate in an after‑hours on‑call roster, including occasional weekend work.
• Support various branch initiatives, adapting to shifting priorities and building transferable communications capability.

Required profile

• Proven experience in media and communications within a complex, dynamic environment.
• Strategic thinker with strong judgment, initiative and problem‑solving abilities.
• Resilient, adaptable and able to manage competing priorities under pressure.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build trust across diverse stakeholders.
