About the role
The University of Tasmania is seeking a Lecturer in Seaweed Biology to join the Centre for Ecology and Biodiversity at IMAS. This full‑time, permanent position is based in Hobart and focuses on advancing sustainable seaweed science through research, teaching, and industry collaboration.
Key responsibilities
- Lead applied seaweed biology research that supports the blue economy and marine conservation locally, nationally, and internationally.
- Develop and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate coursework within the Sustainable Aquaculture specialization of the Master of Marine and Antarctic Science.
- Secure competitive external funding, publish research outcomes, and supervise higher degree research students.
- Coordinate a core research unit, contribute to centre governance, and foster partnerships with government, industry, and Aboriginal communities.
Required profile
- PhD (or equivalent) in Seaweed Biology or a closely related discipline.
- Strong track record of independent research, grant acquisition, and peer‑reviewed publications.
- Demonstrated experience in university teaching and eligibility to supervise HDR students.
- Excellent communication and collaborative skills with diverse stakeholders.
Required skills
- Expertise in seaweed life‑cycles, development, physiology, and cultivation.
- Quantitative data analysis using R or Python.
- Experimental design and statistical analysis.

- Academic Level B appointment with a total remuneration package up to AUD 155,885 (base salary AUD 114,766‑133,235 plus superannuation).
