Internal Auditor

About the role

The Internal Auditor position is a pivotal governance role within the Hills Shire Council, reporting directly to the General Manager. You will provide independent assurance across governance, risk management, compliance and internal controls, working closely with the Executive Team and the Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and deliver a risk‑based Internal Audit Strategy and multi‑year audit plan.
• Conduct operational and compliance audits across council functions.
• Provide expert guidance and analysis to senior leaders on audit findings.
• Serve as an advisory member of the Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee, influencing a culture of transparency and continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with a small team, including a cadet, to manage audit activities and priorities.

Required profile

• Experienced audit professional with a collaborative approach.
• Self‑motivated, able to work autonomously and manage priorities independently.
• Strong communication skills, capable of influencing executive‑level stakeholders.
• Bachelor’s degree in Auditing, Accounting, Commerce, Management or a related field.
• CPA, CA or equivalent professional audit qualification.
• Extensive experience in internal audit, risk and governance, preferably within government or public‑sector environments.
