Associate Engineer/Scientist – Contaminated Land

About the role

SMEC, a global consultancy within the SJ Group, is looking for an Associate Engineer/Scientist to join its high‑performing Environment team in Sydney. You will lead contaminated‑land assessments, mentor junior staff, and contribute to sustainable outcomes across a diverse project pipeline.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver contaminated‑land assessments and produce high‑quality interpretive reports.
• Conduct environmental, planning and risk assessments for a range of projects.
• Support fieldwork, including soil, water and air sampling across multiple sites.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and key stakeholders.
• Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members.

Required profile

• Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering or a related discipline.
• Certified Environmental Practitioner.
• 12+ years of experience in contaminated land, PFAS and hazardous materials.
• Excellent report‑writing ability with strong attention to detail.
• Proven communication and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
• Current driver’s licence and willingness to travel for short‑term fieldwork.
