Technical Principal – Contaminated Land

About the role

SMEC, a member of the SJ Group, is seeking a Technical Principal to lead its Contaminated Land practice in Sydney. This senior position combines technical expertise with strategic leadership to deliver high‑quality, sustainable outcomes for a diverse portfolio of projects.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver contaminated land assessments and produce high‑quality interpretive reports.
• Conduct environmental, planning and risk assessments, including PFAS and hazardous material evaluations.
• Oversee fieldwork such as soil, water and air sampling across multiple sites.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and key stakeholders.
• Mentor and develop junior team members, elevating overall capability.

Required profile

• Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering or a related discipline.
• Minimum 17 years’ experience in contaminated land, PFAS and hazardous materials.
• CEnvP‑SC certification.
• Excellent report writing, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Proven ability to work within multidisciplinary teams and manage projects effectively.
• Current driver’s licence and willingness to travel for short‑term field assignments.
