Tunnel Shift Engineer (Construction)

About the role

The Shift Engineer will provide on‑shift engineering support for one of Melbourne’s largest infrastructure projects, the Suburban Rail Loop East tunnel works. This role involves close collaboration with the Project Engineer and Senior Project Engineer, and may require independent work during night shifts.

Key responsibilities

• Work with construction delivery teams to plan and execute tunnelling activities in line with design, methodology and programme requirements.
• Provide on‑shift site engineering support, reviewing ITPs, work packs, methodologies and drawings to ensure compliance with approved designs and standards.
• Identify, develop and implement technical and construction solutions to address site issues and improvement opportunities.
• Support quality control on shift, including inspections, hold points, test results and construction records.
• Coordinate interfaces between tunnel operations, construction crews, subcontractors and specialist teams.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline from a recognised tertiary institution.
• Minimum 3 years of engineering experience, preferably in tunnelling or large‑scale construction projects.
• Ability to work independently during night shifts and communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

Required skills

• Understanding of tunnel boring machines and associated excavation methods.
• Experience with construction documentation such as ITPs, work packs and technical drawings.
• Knowledge of quality control processes and verification of construction records.
