Tax Compliance Reviewer (Hybrid, Australia)

About the role

The Tax Compliance Reviewer will technically review client‑ready compliance and advisory work, ensuring accuracy, clarity and alignment with tax planning expectations. This senior‑level position focuses on quality control across income tax and GST for a range of entities, while mentoring junior staff.

Key responsibilities

• Perform technical reviews of compliance and advisory deliverables before final client delivery.
• Ensure every piece of work meets the “No Surprises” promise, with sound tax positions and clear explanations.
• Stay up‑to‑date with legislative changes (Income Tax Assessment Act, GST Act, related rulings) and flag implications for clients.
• Mentor team members on technical matters, building their capability over time.
• Deliver review sign‑off within agreed turnaround windows.
• Maintain and raise the technical standard of all client‑facing work.
• Improve first‑time review pass rates and provide constructive feedback.
• Communicate directly and effectively with internal stakeholders and follow firm procedures.

Required profile

• CPA or CA qualified (or near completion) with solid public‑practice experience.
• Proven ability to review income tax returns and financial statements for sole traders, partnerships, trusts, companies and SMSFs.
• Comfortable explaining complex tax positions in plain language for clients.
• Self‑directed, flexible and able to manage time without close supervision.

Required skills

• Expert knowledge of the Income Tax Assessment Act, GST Act and related rulings.
• Familiarity with tax planning areas such as Division 7A, CGT small‑business concessions, FBT, depreciation, franking accounts and non‑commercial loss rules.
• Proficiency with Xero and Xero Practice Manager (primary client platform).
• Experience using MYOB, QuickBooks and Microsoft Office suite.
