Summary Prosecutor – Criminal Law (Darwin)

About the role

The Northern Territory Director of Public Prosecutions is seeking an experienced criminal lawyer to join the team as a Summary Prosecutor. This full‑time, ongoing position offers the chance to influence the criminal justice system while developing advocacy skills across a broad range of matters.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct and appear in criminal proceedings before the Local Court, including bail and arrest matters, directions hearings, youth prosecutions, preliminary examinations, bail applications, and appeals.
• Instruct counsel in Supreme Court trials and manage complex, significant prosecutions.
• Collaborate with senior legal staff to ensure fair and effective administration of justice.

Required profile

• Sound knowledge of criminal law, practice and procedure.
• Strong advocacy skills with proven experience in lower court jurisdictions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
• Well‑developed organisational and time‑management capabilities.
• Strong analytical and interpersonal skills.
• Commitment to public service and the administration of justice.
