Staff Software Engineer (Full Stack, Frontend Focus)

About the role

CommBank is hiring a Staff Software Engineer (Full Stack with Frontend Focus, React, Next.js) for its Business Banking Technology team, based in Sydney or Melbourne. The role shapes digital customer and colleague experiences across Business Banking, influences architecture and engineering standards, and works on modern cloud, data and AI-enabled platforms. You will join one of several engineering crews in the Customer Channel & Data domain, working alongside engineers, product managers, architects and data specialists.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and delivery of scalable, resilient software solutions across customer channel and data platforms.
• Build and evolve applications, APIs, services and platform capabilities that support Business Banking experiences.
• Contribute across the technology stack, including backend services, cloud platforms, customer experiences and data-enabled solutions.
• Drive architectural decisions and influence engineering direction within and across squads.
• Champion modern software engineering practices such as automated testing, CI/CD, observability and DevSecOps.
• Partner with product, business and architecture stakeholders to deliver customer outcomes.
• Mentor engineers and help grow technical capability across the organisation.
• Support platforms in production and drive continuous improvement through automation, monitoring and operational excellence.

Required profile

• Proven experience designing and delivering complex software in large-scale or distributed environments.
• Strong hands-on software engineering capability and a passion for solving challenging technical problems.
• Experience influencing technical direction, architecture and engineering standards.
• A track record of mentoring engineers.
• Experience in customer channels, digital platforms, CRM, data services, AI-enabled products or financial services is highly regarded but not essential.

Required skills

• Frontend: React, TypeScript, Next.js, with full-stack experience.
• Cloud and platform: AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform and/or CloudFormation).
• Engineering excellence: CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, observability and monitoring, DevSecOps, Agile delivery.
• Use of AI-powered engineering tools to improve productivity and quality.
• .NET or Python is a big plus.
• Microservices and event-driven architectures, and modern patterns such as Domain-Driven Design.
