Staff Engineer (Payments, AU)

About the role

EatClub, a food-tech company with over 4 million customers and 8,000 venues, is hiring a Staff Engineer (Payments, AU) for its Software Engineering department. The role is remote and sits in the payments squad that moves money from the customer's tap at a venue, through payment partners, to the venue being paid. It is a hands-on technical leadership role, not a people-management or presentation-heavy role.

Key responsibilities

• Partner with the product manager and tech lead on the direction of the payments platform and turn it into a roadmap the business can plan around.
• Lead the design of the hardest payment problems, explain trade-offs in plain language, and represent the squad with payment partners, acquirers and card schemes.
• Bring an external view of industry best practices and strengthen the platform's reliability, risk and compliance posture.
• Write production code on the most consequential changes, review the rest, and mentor engineers around you.
• Contribute to the technical path of the next stage of the payments strategy and help build a single documented source of truth for how payments work.

Required profile

• At least 8 years of software engineering experience, including 4+ years building production payment systems at a fintech, payments company, acquirer, issuer, scheme or bank.
• Track record of leading the design of significant payments work through to production.
• Experience designing ledgers, settlement and reconciliation systems where correctness is measured in cents.
• Experience leading incident response for payment systems and mentoring engineers through design reviews.
• Credibility with executives and external partners, and fluency with AI development tools.

Required skills

• Strong backend engineering in a modern language on cloud infrastructure.
• Working knowledge of PCI DSS and designing systems that minimise compliance scope.
• Great familiarity with idempotency and duplicate handling.
• Preferred: serverless AWS stack, event-driven systems, card issuing or issuer-processor experience, and migration of a live financial system.
