Signal Processing Engineer / Technology Physicist
Codan Limited · Adelaide
Job description
About the role
Minelab, part of Codan Limited, designs and manufactures metal detectors used to find gold, recover historically significant objects and help humanitarian organisations clear landmines. Its performance depends on the underlying sensing technology, which is developed from first-principles investigation and rapid prototyping through embedded algorithms, product integration and manufacturing. This role is based at the head office in Mawson Lakes, Adelaide, and sits within the Physics and Signal Processing team, turning extremely faint sensor signals into reliable detection and classification performance.
Key responsibilities
- Develop statistical and digital signal-processing algorithms to detect and classify faint signals in challenging environments
- Design robust signal features, estimators, classifiers and sensor-calibration methods
- Build prototypes, plan experiments and evaluate competing approaches using laboratory and field data
- Investigate signal-quality and system-performance problems across sensors, electronics, algorithms and calibration
- Work with embedded software, electronics, mechanical and systems engineers to turn successful prototypes into reliable products
- Explore new sensor concepts and technologies that could deliver customer benefits
Required profile
- A PhD in physics, electrical or electronic engineering, signal processing, applied mathematics or a related discipline is strongly preferred; equivalent depth from postgraduate study or industry research will also be considered
- Ability to reason from first principles and test ideas against real data
- Practical, collaborative approach and clear technical communication skills
Required skills
- Strong foundations in statistics, linear algebra and numerical methods
- Proficiency with numerical computing, preferably Python and its scientific stack
- Depth in one or more of: signal processing, detection, estimation or classification, mathematical or physical-system modelling, electromagnetic sensing, or machine learning applied to sensor data
- Nice to have: C or C++ for embedded or real-time systems, electromagnetism, electronics, sensors or instrumentation, experimental design, system identification, sensor calibration or field testing, product development from prototype to manufacturing, and AI-assisted development tools
What we offer
- A supportive, collaborative culture in a multidisciplinary team
- Modern head office in Mawson Lakes with free secure onsite parking, public transport access and an onsite subsidised caf
- Gym, basketball and tennis court, and game tables
- Flexibility for family life, a child-friendly parenting room and staff events
