Senior Substation Design Engineer (Primary)
Megavar · Hobart
Job description
About the role
Megavar is a specialist high voltage engineering firm delivering primary and secondary design, SCADA, testing and commissioning, and substation maintenance for network businesses, generators and renewable energy developers across Tasmania, NSW, Victoria, SA and Queensland. It is looking for a Senior Substation Design Engineer to lead primary design on transmission and distribution substation and renewable energy connection projects, from concept to detailed design, and to manage mid-sized design projects independently.
Key responsibilities
- Lead HV substation primary design from concept through to detailed design.
- Produce and review single line diagrams, substation layouts, equipment and materials lists, electrical clearance checks and short circuit force calculations.
- Prepare and review design reports and power system calculations.
- Lead design and safety in design workshops with clients and stakeholders.
- Manage mid-sized design projects or packages within larger projects independently.
- Carry out site visits and assessment surveys as projects require.
- Prepare proposals and design budget estimates.
- Work directly with protection, SCADA and commissioning engineers, and with clients and suppliers across Australia.
Required profile
- Bachelor's degree in electrical or power engineering.
- At least 5 years' experience in substation primary design, preferably in a consulting environment.
- Knowledge of Australian transmission and distribution standards and codes, and design experience with Australian network businesses.
- Site experience on substation projects through construction and commissioning.
- Demonstrated leadership: influencing, motivating and delegating within project teams.
- Chartered status (CPEng) is an advantage.
Required skills
- AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
- Experience with, or ability to learn independently, CDEGS, PTW, ETAP and CYMCAP.
What we offer
- Real design responsibility and direct client contact, without the layers of a large multidisciplinary firm.
- A varied caseload across transmission, distribution and renewables projects for clients such as ElectraNet, TasNetworks, TransGrid, Downer, Acciona, Vestas and Goldwind.
- Structured support toward Chartered Engineer / CPEng status.
- Flexible working arrangements, based in Hobart, Launceston, Adelaide or Newcastle, as part of a close-knit team across five offices.
- Relocation assistance for the right candidate moving interstate.
- An attractive salary package benchmarked to experience, with opportunities for progression.
