Senior Manager Engineering Practice

Job description
About the role
CommBank is looking for a Senior Manager Engineering Practice, based in Melbourne or Sydney, to shape engineering performance, leadership and capability across one of Australia's largest technology environments. The role sits within the Engineering Practice, which sets standards, shares learnings and develops skills across the bank's engineering community of around 8,000 people, and combines engineering credibility with strategic leadership.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the strategy for a high-performance engineering culture, setting clearer expectations for engineering performance and leadership.
- Define performance signals by combining engineering personas and other engineering insights to inform leadership decisions.
- Shape what great engineering leadership looks like and strengthen the effectiveness of engineering leaders.
- Connect performance and capability insights with career development, identifying engineers ready for their next opportunity.
- Lead the vision, product direction and evolution of the Engineering Promotion application and its supporting technology, working with engineering delivery rather than as an individual contributor.
- Partner with engineering leaders to upskill teams and stakeholders and strengthen technical capability and engineering mindset.
Required profile
- Credible engineering experience and the strategic thinking needed to operate across a large, complex technology organisation.
- Ideally: experience leading engineering teams and/or hands-on technical experience.
- Demonstrated experience shaping engineering performance, capability, talent or leadership practices at scale.
- Understanding of engineering career pathways, progression and technical capability development.
- Comfortable moving between engineering, people and performance discussions and turning data and insight into priorities and action.
Required skills
- Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing with senior engineering and technology leaders.
- Product and technology leadership with enough technical depth to guide engineering-focused applications and tools.
- Confidence working with engineering data and productivity signals, using judgement rather than isolated measures.
- Continuous improvement mindset balanced with thoughtful risk and cost management.
Applicants who are already part of the Commonwealth Bank Group (including Bankwest, x15ventures) must apply through Sidekick. The advertising ends on 30/10/2026.
