Senior Linux Engineer

About the role

BAE Systems Australia is looking for an experienced Linux Engineer to build, support and evolve the Linux platforms that underpin its engineering, development and research environments. The role works closely with developers, engineers, architects and researchers to turn their needs into practical, secure and maintainable solutions. It is based at the Melbourne Central Office.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain Linux environments for software development, engineering and research workloads.
• Maintain SOEs across RHEL, Ubuntu and related technologies.
• Troubleshoot issues across compute, storage, networking and operating systems, and translate logs and vague symptoms into technical solutions.
• Partner with teams to understand requirements and deliver practical outcomes within security and governance constraints.
• Support large-scale compute environments using BCM, Slurm and Open OnDemand, improving scheduling efficiency, utilisation and performance.
• Develop automation with Bash, Python, PowerShell and Ansible to reduce repetitive work.
• Improve platform consistency, resilience and operational efficiency, balancing security with usability.
• Mentor engineers, write runbooks and share knowledge across teams.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Strong experience administering enterprise Linux environments.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance; applicants must be Australian citizens and eligible to hold one.
• Experience with HPC environments and workload schedulers such as Slurm is a bonus.
• Experience with Azure Stack Hub, Azure Local or hybrid infrastructure is a bonus.

Required skills

• At least 5 years of experience with RHEL, Ubuntu and associated enterprise tooling.
• Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
