Senior Legal Counsel

About the role

Abano Healthcare is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Counsel to lead its Legal and Risk function across Australia and New Zealand. Reporting to the Board and senior executives, you will provide strategic, commercially‑focused legal advice that supports the organisation’s growth and operational objectives.

Key responsibilities

• Act as trusted legal adviser to the Board, CEO, CFO and Executive Leadership Team on governance, regulatory and commercial matters.
• Oversee corporate governance, board support, and compliance frameworks, including privacy, data breach response and risk management.
• Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements and support corporate transactions such as acquisitions and joint ventures.
• Provide legal support to clinical and operations teams, including clinician contracts, service models and dispute resolution.
• Lead and develop the internal Legal and Risk team, manage external counsel and build legal capability across the business.

Required profile

• Minimum 10 years post‑admission experience in commercial and corporate law, preferably with a reputable law firm or senior in‑house role in Australia or New Zealand.
• Proven ability to act as a business partner in a complex, multi‑site or service‑oriented organisation; healthcare experience is highly regarded.
• Strong commercial judgement, organisational and strategic skills, and the ability to deliver outcomes under pressure.

Required skills

• Extensive experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts.
• Sound understanding of privacy, competition, consumer law, regulatory compliance and corporate governance.
• Capability to manage legal risk, compliance programmes and external counsel efficiently.
