Senior Legal Counsel

About the role

BYD is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to provide strategic, commercial and regulatory legal support for its automotive OEM operations in Australia. You will work closely with senior leadership, cross‑functional teams and global headquarters to enable business growth while managing legal risk in a highly regulated environment.

Key responsibilities

• Act as a trusted legal advisor to senior leadership and key business stakeholders, delivering pragmatic advice aligned with corporate strategy.
• Draft, review and negotiate commercial agreements, including supplier, manufacturing, dealer, technology, joint‑venture and data‑sharing contracts.
• Advise on automotive regulatory frameworks such as vehicle safety, emissions, consumer law, franchise law and product liability.
• Support compliance programmes, policies and governance across the organisation.
• Identify, assess and mitigate legal and commercial risks; manage dispute resolution, litigation and regulatory investigations.
• Provide legal guidance on vehicle development, connected cars, EVs, autonomous technologies, IP, data privacy, cybersecurity and AI‑related issues.
• Collaborate with global and regional legal teams and mentor junior legal staff.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with a current practising certificate.
• Minimum 6 + years post‑qualification experience, preferably in commercial contracts and regulatory law.
• Background in automotive, manufacturing or other highly regulated industries.
• Proven ability to engage and influence senior stakeholders.
• Strong commercial judgment and risk‑management skills.
