About the role

The Legal Services Branch of the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) provides in-house government legal services, covering corporate, commercial and public law advice, legislation development, dispute resolution and litigation, and procurement of specialist external legal advice. Working under the direction of the NIAA General Counsel and Principal Lawyers, the successful candidate leads work on legal advice, drafting and strategic support.

Key responsibilities

• Lead legal advice, drafting and strategic support for the design, development and implementation of legislation, policies and programs supporting the NIAA's objectives
• Grant and procurement contracts, property and other commercial law matters
• Freedom of information, privacy, finance law, employment law and other corporate law matters
• Commonwealth dispute resolution and litigation

Required profile

• Legal qualification, admission to practice and eligibility to hold a government-restricted Australian legal practising certificate
• Commitment to the NIAA vision of ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are heard, recognised and empowered
• Proven ability to lead, supervise and develop less experienced staff
• Minimum of 3 to 5 years of post-admission experience strongly preferred
