Senior Infrastructure Engineer - Database Administrator

About the role

A federal government client, a frontline service-delivery agency, is seeking a Senior Infrastructure Engineer (Database Administrator) to implement, manage and retire the infrastructure supporting its digital services, including physical, virtual, networking and cloud infrastructure. The role focuses on SQL Server, Db2 z/OS, Db2 Midrange and MongoDB databases, with an immediate focus on a critical MongoDB upgrade and migration. The estimated start date is 1 January 2027, on a 12-month contract with possible extension terms up to 24 months.

Key responsibilities

• Provide specialist database administration across SQL Server, Db2 z/OS, Db2 Midrange and MongoDB, including the immediate MongoDB upgrade and migration.
• Assess current environments and identify upgrade, compatibility, migration, performance and operational risks.
• Optimise database performance and ensure data consistency, integrity and availability.
• Support database activities in containerised environments and advise on risk mitigation.
• Work with APS technical teams to plan, test and implement upgrades and migrations, minimising downtime.
• Document all work, including configuration changes, upgrade steps, risks, issues and lessons learned.
• Support knowledge transfer to APS staff through blended delivery and skills transfer.

Required profile

• Senior-level (EL1 equivalent) experience; Australian citizen with an active Negative Vetting Level 1 clearance.
• Expert-level administration of SQL Server, Db2 z/OS, Db2 Midrange and MongoDB in enterprise environments.
• Experience supporting database platforms in containerised environments and planning controlled upgrades and migrations.
• Desirable: experience in complex government or enterprise ICT environments and in knowledge transfer and technical documentation.

Required skills

• SQL Server, Db2 z/OS, Db2 Midrange and MongoDB administration, including performance tuning, backup and recovery, replication and high availability.
• Container technologies and enterprise ICT change practices (highly desirable).

Out-of-hours work may occasionally be required. The agency needs the worker at its premises in Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne or ACT, with hybrid working possible if the worker lives within reasonable travel distance.
