Senior GIS Developer

About the role

Jemena, an Australian energy company that owns and operates gas and electricity transportation assets, is looking for a Senior GIS Developer in Sydney. The role provides technical development and system administration support across spatial applications, integrations, interfaces and tools, working with business stakeholders, project teams and fellow developers to improve how people work in the field and across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with business users to understand requirements and deliver practical GIS solutions.
• Design, develop, enhance and support enterprise GIS applications and integrations.
• Maintain and improve spatial systems, interfaces, reports and development tools.
• Contribute to the full software development lifecycle, from analysis through to implementation and support.
• Produce clear technical documentation aligned with architectural and development standards.
• Work within change management, security and governance frameworks.
• Support project delivery with developers, project managers and business stakeholders.
• Identify opportunities to improve system performance, usability and operational efficiency.

Required profile

• Ideally a degree in Software Development, Computer Science, Information Technology, GIS or a related discipline (or near graduation).
• Experience analysing, designing and supporting complex IT systems.
• Knowledge of Smallworld GIS or enterprise GIS platforms.
• Experience with object-oriented programming such as Magik, Java or Python.
• Experience with web technologies including HTML, JavaScript and Node.js.
• Database experience, particularly PostgreSQL and/or VDMS.
• Integration development experience.
• Familiarity with Git or other source control tools.
• Understanding of SDLC methodologies, ITIL and change management practices.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and excellent communication skills.
• Ability to build positive working relationships across technical and business teams.
• Experience in electricity, gas or utilities is highly regarded but not essential.
