Senior Engineer - Billing and Payments (AU)

About the role

EatClub, a food-tech company behind a restaurant discovery and deal platform, is hiring a Senior Engineer for Billing and Payments, based remotely. You will own the flow of money from customer payment through payment partners to venue settlement and invoicing, working with a staff engineer on payments and leading the billing squad on settlements, invoicing and collections across Australia, the UK and New Zealand.

Key responsibilities

• Build and extend payment flows: new payment methods, partner integrations and improvements to how customers pay at venues
• Keep payments reliable by investigating failures, fixing root causes and improving error signals
• Make sure every venue is settled correctly each cycle in every market
• Build billing: invoicing, fees, tax and collections so what a venue sees matches the ledger
• Work with Finance to reconcile money end to end and replace manual processes and support tickets with features
• Review code, protect financial correctness with tests and mentor the squad's mid-level engineer

Required profile

• At least 5 years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years building production payments, billing or similar systems where correctness is measured in cents
• Track record of delivering significant projects end to end in production
• Ability to work day to day with Finance and Customer Support
• Fluency with AI development tools and judgement about where they help and where they mislead

Required skills

• Working knowledge of card payments: authorisation, capture, refund and settlement
• Hands-on integration with a modern payment provider such as Stripe
• Experience building billing and invoicing systems, including tax and collections
• Understanding of ledgers, double-entry accounting and reconciliation
• Strong backend engineering in a modern language on cloud infrastructure, with thorough testing of financial logic
• Debugging intermittent production issues to root cause

Nice to have: fintech or marketplace experience, acquirer/bank or payment scheme familiarity, GST/VAT and e-invoicing knowledge, serverless AWS and event-driven systems, PCI DSS or ISO 27001 exposure, and hospitality tech experience.
