About the role
The University of Newcastle's Digital Technology Solutions (DTS) is looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer for an onsite position at the Callaghan campus. The role sits at the heart of the university's digital transformation, providing technical leadership across an enterprise-grade modern tech stack and leading a small team of developers.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and provision software and infrastructure across enterprise platforms, keeping them scalable, reliable and secure.
- Lead the design, implementation and continuous improvement of AI-assisted development, CI/CD pipelines, automation, observability and infrastructure-as-code.
- Plan and design system requirements for stakeholder needs and coordinate implementation end to end.
- Advise, guide and train DTS and wider University stakeholders on technology platforms.
- Troubleshoot complex scalability and performance issues across multi-system environments.
- Oversee code and build quality, review deployments and enforce development standards.
- Maintain platform health through regular maintenance, upgrades, secure coding and alignment with University security policies.
- Mentor and lead a small team of developers, and build relationships with internal stakeholders, managed-service partners and vendors.
Required profile
- At least 5 years of experience developing on enterprise platforms with complex upstream and downstream dependencies.
- Demonstrated leadership and mentoring capability, including coordinating multiple stakeholders and managing a team of developers.
- Ability to identify, troubleshoot and resolve complex scalability and performance issues, with solid ITSM experience (incident, problem, change, release and service-level management).
- Experience implementing information security, risk management and compliance controls in enterprise technology environments.
- Strong communication skills and knowledge of workplace obligations; Australian residency or a valid work permit required, no visa sponsorship offered.
Required skills
- Hands-on DevOps practice: automation, observability, alerting, infrastructure-as-code, configuration management and deployment tooling.
- Nice to have: experience with ServiceNow or Dynamics 365.
What we offer
- Remuneration of $120,677 - $140,791 plus superannuation, under professional staff conditions.
- Flexible working arrangements (35-hour week), 17% super and salary packaging.
- Additional holiday days, generous personal and parental leave, annual leave loading and a purchased leave scheme.
- Discounts on health insurance, gym memberships, software and travel, plus wellbeing programs.
Applications close 11 November 2026 and must include a resume, a cover letter and a statement addressing the essential criteria, uploaded together as one PDF. The process includes an in-person interview, referee checks and pre-employment checks.
