Senior Backend Software Engineer (TypeScript)

About the role

A full-time, permanent Senior Backend Software Engineer is sought to take a leading role in designing and delivering complex software solutions. The role combines hands-on technical work with leadership: building robust backend systems, solving integration problems and mentoring other engineers. It sits in Brisbane, Australia, and involves contributing to architecture and implementation, setting engineering standards and collaborating with delivery and project stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the architecture, planning and implementation of complex backend solutions across multiple codebases.
• Develop, integrate and maintain services using TypeScript and modern API technologies.
• Build and consume REST and GraphQL APIs, including secure authentication and event-driven integrations.
• Configure and maintain webhooks, data payload transformations and integrations between external systems.
• Set and maintain standards for code quality, testing and development practices.
• Take part in code reviews, technical workshops and design discussions.
• Mentor engineers and guide them on complex technical challenges.
• Work with delivery and project stakeholders to identify risks, manage dependencies and keep technical work on track.
• Contribute to technical documentation, specifications and continuous improvement of team processes.
• Support cloud infrastructure, infrastructure-as-code practices and CI/CD pipelines.

Required profile

• At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience.
• Ability to lead technical discussions, review code and support the development of other engineers.

Required skills

• Strong TypeScript and test-driven development.
• REST and GraphQL APIs, webhooks and event-driven integrations.
• Authentication methods such as OAuth 2.0, API keys and token refresh flows.
• JSON and XML data mapping and transformation.
• SQL or NoSQL databases.
• Cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform, AWS or Azure.
• Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code, and CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions or Bitbucket Pipelines.
• Nice to have: headless commerce (commercetools, headless Shopify), headless CMS (Contentful, Contentstack), iPaaS (Celigo, Workato), monitoring tools (Datadog, AWS CloudWatch), BFF pattern and enterprise system integrations.
