About the role
The Research Assistant will work in the Macquarie University Centre for Motor Neuron Disease, supporting bench‑level investigations into cellular mechanisms of neurodegeneration and evaluating new treatment strategies using cell and zebrafish models.
Key responsibilities
- Provide practical research assistance across multiple MND projects, following approved protocols.
- Perform cellular and pre‑clinical experiments, including work with cell cultures and zebrafish.
- Manage and analyse data, update sample and research databases.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, consumables, and records.
Required profile
- Bachelor degree in medical science or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Strong organisational skills with ability to prioritise multiple tasks.
- Excellent written and verbal communication for liaising with researchers and students.
Required skills
- DNA/RNA purification, PCR, gel electrophoresis, in‑vitro mRNA production.
- Cell culture, fluorescent microscopy, confocal microscopy, western blotting, immunostaining.
- DNA cloning (Gibson, Gateway) and construct assembly.
- Experience with zebrafish (and optionally mouse) models.

- Salary from $81,323 per annum (HEW Level 4) plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading.
