Rail Supervisor

About the role

Strait Link, which provides daily sea freight between Port Melbourne and Port Burnie, is hiring a Rail Supervisor in Port Melbourne. The role coordinates the day-to-day movement of freight by rail, working closely with Aurizon, internal operations and the Fleet team so that freight is booked, manifested and transported efficiently. It covers rail bookings and movements, unit control, hazardous materials declarations and demurrage/storage costs, while keeping accurate records.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate rail bookings with Aurizon so freight is booked accurately and in line with operational requirements.
• Coordinate rail trips and movements, monitoring planned services and making sure freight is ready for scheduled departures.
• Prepare and maintain rail manifests with accurate freight and unit information.
• Complete unit control sheets and keep accurate records of containers and units throughout the rail movement.
• Enter and maintain bookings in internal systems.
• Handle hazardous materials declarations and meet the requirements of the internal transport provider.
• Monitor and control demurrage and storage costs using Excel-based tracking and flag potential extra costs or delays.
• Work with the Fleet and Transport teams to coordinate freight movement and use transport resources efficiently.
• Liaise with internal teams, rail providers and transport partners to resolve issues and keep freight on schedule.
• Identify and escalate delays, booking issues or capacity constraints affecting customers or freight.
• Maintain accurate operational records and documentation on rail movements, bookings, freight and costs.

Required profile

• Extensive supply chain or logistics experience.
• Knowledge of transport mass management and CoR.
• High attention to detail and strong communication skills.
• Safety focus on road, rail and sea.
• DG experience is advantageous.
